Venice, Italy: Travel Guide

NEXT STOP: VENICE, ITALY

DURATION: 4 DAYS, 4 NIGHTS

FLIGHT: 2 HOURS to Venice, Italy from Greece. *Traveling through Europe is a lot cheaper once you’re already there.

VENICE MARCO POLO AIRPORT: The airport was pretty small. As soon as we got off the plane and grabbed our bags, it was easy to find the ticket booth. (As I stated in my Athens post, I looked ahead of time to see what we would need to do to get to our Airbnb so this made things a lot easier) We paid 15 EUROS round trip (per person) for the bus to our Airbnb. After buying our tickets, we were told where our bus would be coming from.

TRANSPORTATION:

The bus signs right outside the airport were easy to understand and they also displayed when the next bus would be coming. We stayed about 10 minutes from the airport and 20 minutes from the prime location in Venice. We traveled around using the bus for the most part and we used the tram our last day to go to brunch. There were several “corner” stores in the area where we were able to purchase tickets from. Using the bus was a little difficult at first because the stops were not as visible as we thought they would be. After awhile though, we got used to the area so we were familiar with the stops.

LODGING:

Our Airbnb was beautiful. It was probably my favorite one because it was really spacious. We didn’t have to wait for anyone to let us in and it was literally right across the street from the bus stop. I think the area we stayed in was perfect also however, there was not many food options around.

FYI: Unless you have plans to visit places like Burano, Murano, or towns that are close to Venice, spending about 2 days is good enough. Venice is really pretty and great for romance because of the views but there’s not much to do outside of eat, drink wine, and shop a little. This part of our trip was definitely the most relaxing. (Which was much needed)

MUST SEE/DO:

  • Eat pizza and pasta: Duh, it’s Italy!
  • Try a Spritz and Limoncello: The first time I went to Italy I didn’t try the Spritz but I did this time and honestly, I would probably never order one again. Lol! It’s just not my kind of drink. But, it’s an Italian wine-based cocktail so you have to at least try one. The Limoncello (Italian lemon liqueur) I actually did taste back in April and I didn’t like it. This time, I tried a different brand in Venice, and it was good! We did tasted it in a wine store and they paired it with a sweet wine. It ended up being delicious, so we bought a bottle of both and took them with us to Paris.
  • Walk up the Rialto Bridge: The view from the top is so beautiful. Visiting during the day and at night is a must!
  • Gondola ride: We ended up not doing one because they can get pretty expensive and eventually, we were kinda over it. But, I’m pretty sure it’s an awesome experience. Especially if you’re traveling with your partner. Something I read before going was to make sure you and the driver have an agreement on the price beforehand, because sometimes they try to get over on you, or change the price. I remember the prices being 80 EUROS for 30 minutes and at night they start at 100 EUROS.
  • Go to the beach: We went to Lido di Jesolo and although it was a hassle getting there, it was a pretty nice beach. We had to take the bus to the airport and wait until another bus came. *Make sure you buy the correct bus tickets because we found out we had the wrong ones on our way back. Paying for a spot on the beach is also a MUST. Most spots were reserved for people who were staying in the hotels so you have to find a booth to pay. The beach staff were really strict about paying and we actually ended up having to leave our spot because we found out the hard way. Lol!

One of my favorite parts about this trip was the wine store we found down the street from our Airbnb. We paid less than 3 EUROS for a liter of wine and it was homemade from the shop. Although the owner could not speak any English, she was really sweet. We went back to this shop about 3 or 4 times for wine. Lol! We even had a little left over to take with us to Paris.

As I stated before, there was not much to do in Venice so it is a good idea to visit other places while you are there. We did not think about it beforehand but once we were out there, we were going to take a day try to another country if it wasn’t too expensive. Visiting somewhere like Morocco, Spain, or anywhere honestly, would be pretty cool and as easy as a day trip. Remember to check out my blog post from our first part of the trip in Athens, Greece and following this post, check out our final stop in Paris, France.
